Wednesday 16th July saw many Nottinghamshire runners venture to Worksop for the fourth edition of the Summer League Road Race series as Worksop Harriers & AC hosted our home match from Worksop College. A bumper turn out saw nearly 40 of the Green and Black amongst the race, as well as many of our friendly crew on course making the night happen with excellent results as standard. Two season debuts from James Lonsdale (11th) and Luke Davis (18th) saw a strong start as they joined Tom Shaw (15th) for three Harriers in the top-20, joined by Matt Daly (40th) and Paul Marriott (50th) saw the Harriers Men finish 4th on the night. Not far behind and Barnaby Gray had another excellent run (59th) to cement his place in the top-3 for Age Cat medals with one race to go whilst season debuts for Dom Fielding, Trevor Symcox, Neil Allsop, James Morris, John Harrison and Stuart McCluskie were all welcome additions.

Over to our ladies side and fantastic run saw Hannah Miller once again take 3rd whilst Sally Ormrod followed closely where her excellent season continues, finishing 20th on the night and now up to 2nd in Age Cat for the season. Madi Spencer finished 31st and Lucy Binch (37th) was enough to put the ladies also in 4th both on the day and in the series. Again season and club debuts were also welcome from Gabs Bower, Claire Allsop, Julie Gaskill, Alex Edwards, Sheryl Hibbert, Priya Paramasi and Louise Morris as many recent additions to the club got their first taste of Summer League.

On to the weekend and Retford AC kindly invited Worksop Harriers to their Summer Fayre which this year incorporated the annual Sinclair Super Mile. Four and a bit laps of a classic cinder track, the day was a proper British summer with heavy rain on and off making the track almost XC along the back straight with flooding and a couple of slippy corners but it didn’t stop a great turn out and excellent performances. Seeded races starting at 10+ minute miles and then down to the fastest 5:00 and faster group, there were some fantastic performances and plenty of PB’s for the green and black as Holly Bulmer and George North were the fastest juniors on the day and Kirsty Fairbairn-Winter fastest lady. Matthew Daly was the fastest Harrier man on the day with Sam Roberts of Retford running the overall fastest mile in 4:43

It wasn’t all running this week either as Mark Hazlehurst volunteered at the European u23 Championships in Bergen, Norway over four days.  A great event and showcasing many emerging athletes on the European and World stages.   Over the four days temperatures hovered about 30 degrees and humid which is very untypical for Bergen but didn’t stop some great GB performances which saw the team finish second on the medal table. Between his time officiating Mark likes to find time to fit in a parkrun and that meant a return to Lovstien parkrun after a 6 year gap.   A trail course below the mountain, Mark puts this up there with the toughest parkruns he has run!
