Kicking things off on Saturday four young Harriers were taking part in the County Schools Final at the Harvey Haddon Stadium looking to go on represent Nottinghamshire County at the Mason Trophy next week and they didn’t disappoint. First qualifier of the day saw Summer Johnson in the HJ. Clearing close to her own height and a PB of 1.51m. Not having to wait long for another Harrier addition, Miley Townrow added her name to the squad, running an excellent paced 3,000m to drop the competition on the final lap bell to take the win. Back to the Jumps and Ceryn Greaves finished 2nd in the LJ to make it Three Harriers in the Mason Trophy squad who will now go on to represent Nottinghamshire next week in Staffordshire as takes on nine other counties.
Meanwhile at the Independent Schools Association Nationals we had a strong Harrier representation. Isaac Beresford finished 2nd in the LJ (4.56m) to take silver before also competing in the 100m and 4x100m Relay. The Norths also had a superb day as George takes home two national medals, silver in long jump and bronze in 600m also running his fastest ever 600m beating his PB by 4 seconds to run 1:49.
Penny, Freddie and James became the first ever junior para athletes at the ISA nationals and all three took home medals, bronze for penny in howler and 60m and gold and silver for Freddie who also ran a superb 60m time of 10.40s showing some great speed potential! All three hope to inspire more ISA schools to enter children into the para category but are already inspirational athletes!
Off the track and in to the and there was a huge combined total of miles from the seniors and we start with 10 taking on a real club favourite of the Swaledale Marathon. Superbly organised as ever by Swaledale Outdoor Club and supported by Swaledale Mountain Rescue teams. At just under 24 miles, with 4000 ft of elevation, the route offers self-navigation across varied, challenging and remote terrain, which for the most part was drier than usual. The threat of heavy thunder storms and lightning on race day led the organisers to warn that the race might be cancelled at short notice, or abandoned part way through if conditions deteriorated. Luckily, the forecast improved and runners were able to start without any delays, although damp and humid conditions and low cloud led to poor visibility for the first half of the race. Finishers were rewarded with certificate and piece of locally made pottery for a bit of novelty amongst the usual medals and tshirts from other races! Finish times for us were Jim 5:20, James 5:22, Cathy 5.34, Sarah 6:14, Kerry 6::32, John 6:34, Gill 6:38, Mark & Lee- Anne 6:53, Sally 7:30.
Starting on Saturday but bleeding well in to Sunday we head over to Edale before heading (very!) North as Harriers took on the Summer Spine south. 108 miles and nearly 18,000 ft of elevation, the Spine was set to be one of toughest challenges are Harriers has faced as they head up the Penine way headed over to Ladybower, Torside, Crowden, up to Hebden Bridge and in to the night before on to Cowline, Gargave, a tough navigation of Malham Cove and a punishing climb up Pen-y-Ghent before finally finishing late Sunday afternoon in Hawes. The preparation and recce’s clearly paid off for the first time Spine racers as Matt Daly finished in 34:24:04 and a superb 11th place whilst Henry Brady wasn’t far behind in 35:28:12 and 18th.
