The Worksop Harriers multi-events squad was very well represented at the Midland Schools Championships, all competing for Nottinghamshire, this past weekend.
We had 7 athletes competing in 5 of the 6 age categories and all performed to a very high standard over a hot weekend at Mansfield, and all can be very proud of their performances and overall rankings, with several of our athletes competing at this level for the first time.
Senior Boys and Girls
The Outstanding performance of the weekend came in the senior girl’ heptathlon competition, with Alicia Wells becoming the Midlands Champion with 4346 points, a victory margin of almost 600 points and leading the Nottinghamshire team to the English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) finals in September, in her first year in this age group.
She achieved 5 personal best performances in the seven events, along with an overall best performance points total of 4346 and breaking the Worksop Harriers 800m ladies record in the process with a time of 2m 26s (a record previously held by Emily Race), at the end of a very long weekend. A great example for the rest of the squad.
In the Senior Boys Decathlon, Brooklyn Crooks finished in 3rd place and is now getting back into shape following a bad ankle injury, sustained at the National indoor championships earlier this year. He achieved three pb’s along with an overall points total pb, so things are looking good for the rest of his summer.
Brooklyn will join Alicia in the ESAA finals in September at Stoke. They have also both been selected for the English Schools individual events finals in three week’ time at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham (the recent Commonwealth Games venue).
Intermediate Boys and Girls
Freddie Marks was our representative in the Intermediate Boys Octathlon. He demonstrated his all-round ability and enthusiasm competing in his first Octathlon and in his first year in this age group, finishing overall 12th with 3058 points.
Freddie is still learning most of the events and has so much scope for improvement that a podium position and selection for the ESAA finals next year is a realistic possibility. Freddie achieved six pb’s over the two days with his 1.77m high jump being the stand out performance.
In the Intermediate Girls we had two representatives in Charlotte Ayton and Grace Walton finishing in 8th (3321 points) and 13th (3092 points) position respectively and, along with Kitty Laurence, a past Worksop Harrier (3rd overall), helped the Nottinghamshire Team to overall third place.
Both of these girls have tremendous potential, they produced three personal best performances each, over the weekend, and both posted their best Heptathlon scores. With Charlotte having lost a lot of recent training time, due to GCSE’S, and Grace new to athletics this year, the future is bright for both of them. Grace has the potential and enthusiasm to join Freddie Marks, and others, on the podium next year and Charlotte will join Alicia in the senior girls Nottinghamshire team, which will only strengthen that winning team.
Junior Girls Pentathlon
Worksop Harriers had two further representatives in this age group, through Summer Johnson 11th overall (2007 points) and Emilia Jonczyk 18th overall (1088 points).
Both girls are new to this event, helping the Nottinghamshire team to 4th place overall, and with Emilia coming in as a late replacement, with very little time to fully prepare, she made an excellent contribution producing very good pb’s in long jump and high jump and delivering pb’s in 4 of her 5 events. Summer is already showing excellent all round potential and has worked very hard at all of the five disciplines over the past few months and this shows in her performances, especially in the 800m, where she has knocked over 20s off of her pb in the past few weeks, and the hurdles where her technique has really improved. Summer achieved pb’s in 3 of her 5 events and is another one of our athletes who is still at the bottom end of the age group and is a genuine podium possibility for next year.
Well done to the whole squad, they have worked exceptionally hard over the past few months and their performances at these championships are testimony to that.
