Just a couple events to cover this weekend but a fantastic set of results as over the weekend several young harriers were representing Nottinghamshire Schools at the English Schools Regional Finals down at Bedford, with reporting from Peter Fendley. Seven athletes competing at the English Schools National Combined Events Championships this past weekend, having all qualified through the Regional Championships round and representing Nottinghamshire.
Charlotte Ayton (12th), Grace Walton (18th) and Nelly Thornton (21st) were the three scoring athletes which earned Nottinghamshire a Silver Medal in the Senior Girls Heptathlon team event. An excellent achievement, and a rare medal for Nottinghamshire at national level, but just reward for the hard work that they have put in over the past few years.
In the Senior Boys Decathlon, Freddie Marks had a tremendous weekend, accumulating 9 PB's out of his 10 Decathlon events and only just missing a clean sweep by narrowly failing a new PB height of 1.83m in the high jump, finishing in 12th place overall. This was all the more impressive considering the serios ankle injury which Freddie sustained earlier in the year whilst Pole Vaulting.
In the Intermediate Girls Heptathlon, Summer Johnson finished 31st and put in some excellent performances whilst battling a foot injury, aggravated the previous weekend during the inter-counties high jump competition. To hurdle and jump as well as she did under the circumstances is a tribute to her fitness, courage and determination to never give in.
In the Junior Boys, Isaac Beresford had an excellent introduction to the Pentathlon at National Level, finishing 14th overall and the 2nd year 8 boy in the competition, dominated at the top by year 9 students.
In the Junior Girls, Scarlett Stoddart, also year 8 and the most recent addition to our squad, was our highest placed individual, coming from 29th after 3 events to finish in 10th position with excellent long jump and 800m performances in her last two events.
It wasn't all track and field action however, as a we had out on to the road (and a little bit of beach) at the Humber Coastal Half 10k and Half Marathon over in Cleethorpes. Starting at the 10k distance and fantastic performance from Darcie Wasnidge saw not just a big-PB (42:26) but also finishing 5th overall whilst mum Sue also enjoyed a superb run out with her own PB (54:28) and another club-standard achieved.
On to the half distance and two excellent but battling performances with the ever present wind saw Julie Holloway score a course PB (1:44:16) with Tamara Hazlehurst following in 1:52:54
