This weeks race report sees the running come to Worksop as Worksop Harriers & AC hosted the annual Worksop Half Marathon this year incorporating the Nottinghamshire Half Marathon Championship. Starting from Sparken Hill Academy it’s straight up as runners head up Sparken Hill before a good few undulations along Ollerton Road to Carburton Lodge. From here it’s along Limetree Avenue and on a perfect Autumn Day, not only making for great racing conditions but also rewarding runners with a particular scenic trip through Clumber as runners headed through half way and up to the central cross roads. Climbing back out of Clumber runners headed up to Truman’s Lodge before more rolling roads of Windmill and Old Coach Road, around the historic grounds of Worksop College before more fantastic scenes down Cuthberts Avenue before the long awaited fast finish back down Sparken Hill. This year the organising committee welcomed some new blood to work with the experienced old guard which worked superbly over the year making a mammoth task look easy! Combing with over hundred volunteers from the club as well as family and friends welcomed over a thousand runners to Worksop who we hope will be returning next year as well as spreading the world of a vital club event so that others can experience the beauty the challenge and the thrill of one of the best half marathons around!

This years edition was won by Sam Roberts of Retford AC in a time of 1:08:04 and Eleanor Warren of St. Theresa’s AC in 1:22:27

Runners up were our very own James Lonsdale (Worksop Harriers & AC) in 1:08:46, Daniel Bevan (Unattached) in 1:12:46, Hannah Cox (Edinburgh AC) in 1:24:01 and Keri Pearson (City of Hull AC) in 1:26:14

The success this week didn’t stop at just hosting events this week as amongst the crowd we also had runners wearing the Green & Black vest to great success as we raced some of the finest runners from across the county. As already mentioned, James Lonsdale ran superbly to 2nd place where he led home a Harriers Men Team to The Men’s Team County Half Marathon Competition. Dom Fielding bagged a HM PB in 7th (1:15:57) followed shortly by Tom Shaw (bagging a county Vet comp medal) in 9th (1:16:37). Next up with finishing battle down Sparken Hill, Henry Brady (32nd) and a busy weekend for Adrian Hopkinson (34th) crossed closely in 1:23:11 and 1:23:27. Straight back from Yorkshire Marathon and Jack Hutchinson (280th) ran 1:46:47 whilst finishing off with a PB, Danny Watts (509th) ran 1:58:00

It wasn’t just success for the men as leaving it far to long but making the wait worth it, Sally Ormrod ran her first half marathon in over a decade. Finishing 11th overall in an excellent 1:33:51, Sally made her first half back a productive one as he took home 1st place in the county age group championship!

Next week we’ll be heading off road as we head just down the road to Berry Hill for the ever popular national XC Relays.
