Young athlete aims for regional title

Worksop Harrier Tyler Broome is on target to win the British Triathlon East Midlands Junior Series.

If his form continues, the Tuxford Primary Academy pupil could be selected for the British Triathlon development squad. He also aims to make the regional academy. Tyler, 10, of Tuxford, is leading the series after victory in the latest event in the seven-race competition in Ashbourne. Tyler was on the shoulders of the lead runners in third place at the end of the first 1,200m run. He moved up to second in the cycle section and left the final transition in first place, leading from the front throughout in the second run. Tyler trains for five days a week and has started core work at the East Midlands Running Centre, Retford, under GB runner John Beattie. Tyler also trains with Mansfield Triathlon Club to improve his cycling, swims for Retford Swimming Club and runs for Worksop Harriers. His results for Harriers in county races count towards his potential selection for the British Triathlon development squad. Tyler said: “Achieving personal bests and county medals keeps me motivated. “As my mum always says, success breeds success.” Sponsorship from Retford Auto Electrical earlier this year helped to provide him with a specialised Boardman Bike. Proud mum Dawn Johnson said: “It gave Tyler a psychological boost knowing someone believed in him. “It started his year on the right footing. “I’m excited for Tyler and his future within British triathlons. If he continues with his hard work and commitment, the sky’s the limit for him.” The youngster’s focus is to gain qualifying times in the 200m swim and 1,500m run that could earn a British Triathlon regional academy place.
