Weekly Roundup – 1st October

In a week where the Berlin Marathon and Bekele made the news for missing a new World Record by an agonising 2 seconds, one of our own was also making his way around Berlin breaking their own records. Tom Shaw managed to grab a place in the 46th edition of this World Marathon Major. Mild temperatures and light winds would have made perfect conditions had the rain held off a little longer. After a successful season of training and couple PB’s to boot, Tom was keen to make the most of a fast day in Berlin and took full advantage, running a well metered effort (running every 5k split between 18:14 and 18:53 to achieve of big marathon PB of 2:37:02, knocking over 7 minutes of his previous best to finish in the top 400 from nearly 45,000 runners. Tom’s achievement is significant not only for his own PB but it also gains him both championship entry in to the London Marathon, and also makes him the first Senior-Male category athlete to achieve a club gold standard for long distance running since the standards were introduced in the early-2000’s, and only the third athlete over all events! An excellent result to mark the end a successful season of road running Tom!

Also on Sunday, our Junior section got their X-Country season underway with a very soggy trip to Newark. Heavy rain made for some very sloppy conditions with plenty of mud and puddles but the young Harriers didn’t let this dampen their spirits as they took part in a variety of distances from 1.5 to 4 km for the u11, u13 and u15 boys and girls categories. Each race consisted of 30-40 competitors. Worksop has 19 athletes in total? with particularly highlights including a 5th overall for Travis Senior (u15’s Boys), Emily Cartwright 6th overall (u13’s girls) and in the u11’s girls race, Miles Townrow showed she won’t be easily fazed as after managing to loose her shoe straight out of the starting blocks, put in a strong performance to finish second harrier, just behind Martha Hazlehurst. The juniors next XC meet will be October 20th followed by dates in November and December but first the juniors have indoors sports hall on October 13th so if you know any budding youngsters interested in either (or both!) some good indoor clean or muddy outdoor XC fun, please get in touch!
