Those Were The Days
In the hope of jogging a few memories we've reproduced a press cutting from yester-year (more to follow). If you have any old photos, press cuttings etc relating to the Worksop Harriers please contact us to help us create a record of the clubs history.
WORKSOP DOMINATE AT WOLLERTON(Copied from a press cutting from The Worksop Guardian kindly produced by Stewart Fisher – there’s no date, but it’s sometime between 1970 -71)
A lot of talent is concentrated in this picture (unable to reproduce) of Worksop runners who won 16 of a possible 20 medals in the Notts cross-country championship at Wollerton Park Saturday. Left to right, back row, Gerald Story, secretary, Richard Platford, Simon Fox, Terry Colton, Karl Simpson, Frank Fox. Front Nigel Farrow, Vincent Scime, Stewart Fisher, Robert Platford, John Hewitt, John Bell, Shane Robinson and Adam Fox. The shield is the Shacklock Shield, won for in the boys (14-16 age group) for the third year in succession. Missing from the photo is Martin Haldon, who won the colts championship.
The Nottinghamshire County Cross-Country Championship at Wollerton Park last Saturday were almost completely dominated by Worksop Harriers. Out of five races which took place Worksop achievements include three team victories, four individual victories: two individual second placing, and three individual thirds. Quite a haul in fact.
The pattern of the afternoon was set in the very first race, the Colts two miles Championship. In this event there were 72 finishers. Supporters at the finish witnessed an amazing performance as Worksop’s 6 youngsters came home…………first, second, third, fourth, fifth & sixth!
Martin Haldon led the team home 19 seconds clear of the rapidly improving Vincent Scime. Some way further back the Ludlam pair John Bell and Shane Robinson and the young Adam Fox hotly pursued by Nigel Farrow.
One could not help being sorry for Fox & Farrow. Despite very fine performances they were not scoring members of the team (four, score only) and so were not entitled to receive any award. However the satisfaction gained from being part of such a remarkable club success must have been considerable and their turn for prizes will surely come in time.
Yet another wonderful effort from the diminutive Stewart Fisher (only 5ft 1inch, but every inch an athlete) earned him his first County AAA title over the country. Fisher proved too much of a handful for English Schools star Barry Moss of Notts A.C. and stormed to an 18second win.
Robert Platford maintained his fine form of recent weeks to gain a well-merited third place in this race. Carl Simpson and John Hewitt ran steadily to ensure another title for their club.
The Youths Race was dominated from start to finish by Terry Colton who thus recorded his fourth consecutive victory in these championships. Peter Andrews outlasted Notts A.C.’s Steve Baker in the battle for second position, while Simon Fox on little training was a comfortable fourth. Peter Fendley from Retford Grammar School finished like sprinter for 8th place and Russell Stanners finished 21st in yet another Worksop team victory.
Paul Deriaki scored a runaway win in the junior Championship with Edward Parkinson 6th and Teddy Middleton 13th. Unfortunately the club only had three runners and was thus deprived of a further team awards.
In the Senior Event over 9 miles leading marathon runner Colin Kirkham from Coventry was the clear winner in 46 mins 54 seconds. Worksop’s George Gandy untroubled by injury for the first time in several weeks had probably the best run of his comeback to-date and finished 16th in 52 mins 29 secs. Ex-Worksopian Mick A’Bear, now running well for Thurrock A.C. came 11th out of some 55 finishers.
As a result of these championships Terry Colton, Peter Andrews and Simon Fox have been selected to represent Nottinghamshire in the Inter-Counties Championship at Branunston, Leicester on 16th January. Next race for club members will be the North Notts Schools races on 23rd January and the North Midland league at Derby on 30th January.
