Chesterfield Canal Relay

This is a challenge race between the Harriers & Retford AC along the Chesterfield Canal between Worksop & Retford & back again. The start alternates each year between Worksop & Retford. It's Retfords turn to stage the relay this year so we'll be running from Reford to Worksop & back again - followed by a buffet at their end.

The date will be Thurs 29th May 2008. All of you eager to run please contact John Harrison - we need at least 10.

This is how it went last year (2007):

The 8th running of the annual relay race between Worksop Harriers & Retford AC along the Chesterfield canal took place on Thurs 7th June. I thought we were in trouble when I could only get 11 runners to put their names down (you only need 10, but I knew what to expect!).

So come the day, no surprise 9 runners turn up. Luckily an unsuspecting Helen Eastland came along to watch (or so she thought!). After a bit of persuasion & despite having run 7miles already & being full of Spag’Bog’ she agreed to do the turn-round leg – thus giving her 50 minutes to digest her tea.

Now we’ve at least got a team and don’t have to just hand over the trophy (which Luke’s lost!) and all in all it was quite exiting. At the first change over at Scofton Top Lock only one second separated the teams. Here Avo & Craig handed over to Russell & Richard, who gained us a 35 second lead at Ranby.

Big John & Andy then extended the lead to 1 minute 51 seconds on the next leg to Green Mile Bridge. Tracey & Stevie Rew ran the next leg to Lady Bridge. Where they handed over a reduced lead of 1 minute 31 seconds to Dr J1mmy & a rather nervous Helen (yes, she of the tired legs & still full tummy).

After a brave turn-round leg we’re 4 minutes 34 seconds behind & looking rather out of it. But after Avo & Craig run back to Green Mile & Russell & Richard back to Ranby, we’ve pulled the deficit back to 2 minute 20 seconds. And a storming leg by Big John & Andy reduce it to 49seconds at the last change over at Scofton Top Lock. Which was pretty good running by everyone.

On the final leg Stevie Rew’s lack of miles in his legs told. He’d come expecting to do the 4 mile turn-round leg, but was bounced off that in favour of Helen & ended up running nearer 10 miles! So it was another good effort, even if we lost by 2 minutes 18 seconds.

Following the race we all retired to the Kilton Inn & enjoyed a buffet and a beer (thanks Stef!). Chirs Ryan (Retford, & the events instigator in 2000) was very understanding about the lost trophy – he’s not the kind of person to go on & on about something (just like we never mention the time we won the trophy & he’d forgotten to bring it! Or come to think about it, the time he didn’t put a marshal on the canal to turn the runners through the hole in the hedge at the finish!) Only joking Chris! See you next year!!
