Annual Club Trips
Swaledale Marathon. (by Gary Edwards)
My fascination and passion for this race started 12 years ago, when a freind of mine, whose father was at the time a member of the Edale Mountain Rescue team, suggested that I enter the race. My freind (Paul) had competed in the event several times before and his father had completed all but a few of the races since its inception. I was a keen & lean athlete in those days running with Barnsley Harriers and for the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Volunteers (TA), as well as been more than enthusiastic about chucking myself down hillsides on my Marin mountainbike, with often disasterous concequences. I accepted this challenge without hesitation.
For that first year the plan was to travel to Reeth / Grinton on the Friday night before the race, stay in a youth hostel, (I hadn't done this since my boy scout days), run the race on Saturday along with a few other freinds of Pauls family, then travel home that evening.
