Chris Carver - Ultra Runner
Chris Carver - Ultra Runner
Posted on Monday, 25 May 2009 09:58AM by
Ultra runner Chris Carver ran non-stop from this hometown of Otley to Trafalgar Square in London in 45hour & 15minutes – a distance of 218miles.
Having set off at 9am last Saturday he arrived at the finish line early on Monday morning. The unusually good weather for a bank holiday weekend made his job all the harder as the heat on Saturday became a major concern. Nonetheless ultra running is as much a psychological as physical challenge & Chris’s willpower & determination proved decisive.
He was raising funds for Orchid, the only UK registered cancer charity to focus entirely on male-specific cancer: prostrate, penile & testicular. Orchid exists to save lives & suffering caused by these diseases by funding medical research & promoting awareness about them.
Chris is himself a sufferer & has also lost half a lung to secondary cancer, which makes this achievement all the more remarkable.
As his route took him through Worksop the Harriers got involved to provide a back-up vehicle & support runners for the part of his journey from Conisbrough (mile 44) to Southwell (mile 78).
Caroline McGinley joined in running for 22miles – further than she had ever run before, while Steve Battle, himself an experienced ultra runner, kept Chris company for 31miles. The amazing thing was that when the support crew handed Chris over to his next handlers at 11:20pm Saturday night in Southwell Chris looked fresher than both of them, even though he had run 78miles himself & been on the go for nearly fourteen and a half hours at that point!
