Notts AAA Awards

The Worksop Harriers were well represented at the Nottinghamshire Amateur Athletic Association annual awards held at the Festival Hall, Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
 
Harriers President Mike Paxman  & his wife, Maureen, won the award for ‘Contribution to Track & Field Athletics’ while Harriers Chairman, Peter Fendley, received his County Badge in recognition of his contribution to Worksop Harriers & to athletics in Nottinghamshire as a whole.
 
The Harriers juniors coaching team of Michele Harrop & Helen Eastland also made it on to the final short list of three in the ‘Development Coach of the year’ section.
 
Former Worksop Harrier, Tesni Ward, now competing for Sheffield, won the ‘Outstanding Athlete Award’ for under 17 women. The Portland School pupil has truly had an outstanding year as she finishes 2008 ranked as the top shot putter in the country for her age. She is also ranked 3rd Nationally in both the discus & the javelin.
 
Mike & Maureen Paxman have been involved in officiating at track & field events since 1964 & have been on the National List for the past 30 years. Both have been judges at National & International level. Mike has held many rolls in Notts AAA including President, Chairman & Chairman of the Finance committee. While Maureen is a Life Vice President of Notts AAA & the past Secretary of both the Officials & the Track & Field Committees. Both Mike & Maureen are Life Vice Presidents of Worksop Harriers.
 
Peter Fendley has been a member of Worksop Harriers since 1966 a Committee Member since 1981. He has spent 15 years as Chairman & 5 years as President. In that time he has been heavily involved in organising all 27 Worksop Half Marathons. Over the past 25 years he has organised 4 or 5 exchange trips a year with Belgium, Dutch, German & Russian athletes visiting Worksop & Harriers members competing abroad. Due to these trips around 300 different local people have made foreign friends & a similar number of people have visited  Worksop.
 
All this time Peter has been an active athlete having represented Nottinghamshire as a schoolboy & competed in the English Schools National Championships & he is still winning county medals in the over 50’s age group. He is also father of 6 children, two of whom are reigning county champions, in fact his eldest daughter, Amy, is unbeaten in the past 16 years in the County Long Jump & she has won Midland & National medals. Peter is also a level 2 Sprint & Endurance coach & in his spare time he is also Newark AC ladies team manager.
