London Marathon Draw

Posted on Wednesday, 19 November 2008 08:05PM by JH/PF
This year, because of the size of the Worksop Harriers membership, we have been awarded 3 Club Entries into the 2009 Flora London Marathon.

These entries are for Clubs to issue to their members 'in recognition of services to their Club'. Over the years, the Worksop Harriers Committee has felt that to apply this criteria, as it stands, is subjective and could easily cause disharmony amongst members. This has resulted in your Club offering these tickets to members, by way of a Club 'Draw', provided that those wishing to enter the draw have already applied, and been rejected, for the London Marathon in question.

This year the Draw will take place at Manton Club, on Wednesday, 26th November, IMMEDIATELY AFTER the monthly Committee Meeting, and a small buffet will be provided, free of charge. The Committee Meeting starts at 7.30pm and, as Club Members, you are always invited to attend these Committee Meetings and air your views, although only elected Committee Members are allowed to vote on any proposals made.

At the Worksop Harriers AGM in 2008, the criteria for being eligible for London Marathon Club Entries was reviewed and some additional criteria were proposed, and accepted. Eligibility for a Club Entry into this years London Marathon is, therefore, as follows:-
  • Members must have applied for entry into the 2009 Flora London Marathon and been rejected.
  • Members must provide proof of rejection (The rejection slip will do) prior to the Draw taking place. This is a Members own responsibility.
  • Members must have been paid up members for the last two years, at the time the Draw takes place (i.e. for 2007 and 2008), and must pay their membership for 2009, the year of the race in question, before receiving their entry. Membership is due before the first of January,2009, anyway.
  • Because these are Club allocations, members must promote Worksop Harriers by wearing their Club Vest for the London Marathon. Under certain circumstances, a special dispensation may be given, if representation is made to your Committee and accepted as being for a worthy reason. Failure to comply with this ruling will result in exclusion from the draw for 2 years.
  • The first three names (see note 1 below) drawn out of the hat will be offered the Club Entries. Three further names will be drawn out and these will be the first, second and third reserves, in the order drawn.
  • If anyone who is successful in receiving a Club Entry subsequently becomes injured, or does not wish to take part in the race for any reason, then the first reserve will be offered the entry, and so on for any further injuries, etc.
  • Any Member giving up his place to a reserve, provided that it is before the end of January, 2009,  will be allowed one of the Club Entries the following year, provided we receive sufficient allocation.
  • If the owner of a Club Entry realises that he/she will not be able to run, after January, 2009, then that individual must defer the entry, via the London Marathon office, to the following year, under their own name.
  • Anyone actually running the London Marathon, using the Club Entry, will be excluded from the draw the following year, to ensure that as many Club Members as possible get the chance to take part in this great occassion, at least once in their running carreer. If there is insufficient applicants for the Club Entry, then those who ran the previous year will then become eligible for the remaining ticket(s).
Notes:-
1. Although we have 3 numbers allocated this year, only 2 are available, as Nigel Farrow was successful in last years draw, but gave his number to Mike New. This means that Nigel is eligible for a Club Entry this year. It also means that Mike New and Sharon Farrow, the other recipient of a Club Entry last year, are not eligible for Club Entries this year. However, if there are less that 2 members wishing to apply for Club Entries, then one or both Entries could still be available, and a draw including only Mike and Sharon could be required, provided they have met the other necesary criteria.

2. Any replacement runner (one of the reserves mentioned above), using a Club Entry number, must notify the London Marathon Office of the change, and must do so before the 13 February, 2009.

3. Anyone wishing to propose alternative criteria may do so at the Worksop Harriers AGM in 2009
