The junior Worksop Harriers had another outstanding performance to strengthen their hold on third place in the Notts Mini League after the second meeting at the Harvey Haddon Stadium at Nottingham. This excellent result shows how the lack of proper facilities can be overcome with a group of dedicated athletes and top quality coaches. Harriers Chairman, Peter Fendley said:
“The rebuilding of both of the towns secondary schools has meant we have lost both running tracks we had access to. That our juniors can out perform so many clubs with full facilities is credit to both the youngsters and our very dedicated coaches who do an excellent job. The juniors now meet every Wednesday, 5pm till 6.30pm at St Augustine’s school where the helpful staff have marked out a 100meter straight and 200meter circular track. The club is now reaping the benefits of these facilities.” He added “ Athletics is an excellent strengthening and conditioning for any youngster whatever sport they are taking part in. Budding young athletes are always welcome to come along and join in.” Results from Harvey Haddon.

A strong turnout by the senior Harriers saw them win the men’s team prize while their ladies finished 2nd in the Ranby 10km race.
Steve Battle (36:13, 3rd) led them home and won the 1st over 45’s prize, he was closely followed by John Hewitt (36:58, 7th) who won the first over 50’s age category.
The rest of the Harriers finished: Tim Doughty (17th, 38:43), Craig Argyle (19th, 39:23), John Harrison (33rd, 40:57), Keith Hopkinson (34th, 41:04), Philip Harrop (36th, 41:09), Tony Savage (47th, 41:59), Jimmy Kelly (106th, 47:39), David Ward (108th, 47:45), Caroline McGinley (109th, 47:48 PB). And Maurice Jones (217th, 1:21:30) who collected the trophy for the oldest finisher at 82 years young!
After all this running a few Harriers still had enough energy left to compete in the Elmton Chase, indeed Steve Battle (17th, 33:32) had so much running left in his legs he took in a few extra fields. This bodes well for his forthcoming 750mile race across France, although he may wish to brush up on his navigation skills! The rest of the Harriers finished as follows: John Harrison (11th, 33:05), Keith Hopkinson (15th, 1st over 60, 33:30), Charlotte Hewitt (48th, 39:18).
