The Worksop Harriers dominated the Ranby 10mile race last weekend winning both the male and the female team competitions. The race set off in a wintry snow flurry & finished in warm spring like conditions – before the snow returned as the runners headed home. The course included sections of smooth tarmac, rough footpaths & a farm track, it making it a very varied & enjoyable event. John Hewitt (1:01:21), showing a welcome return to top form, led them home finishing 4th overall & also winning the prize for the over 50’s age category. He was closely followed in by Steve Battle (9th, 1:01:42) & Paul Dickinson (15th, 1:03:10). The ladies team was led home by Carol Lonsdale (85th, 1:20:00), with Caroline Mcginley (93rd, 1:21:30) & Julie Bonser (99th, 1:22:11) hot on her heels. Richard Simms (16th, 1:03:33), John Harrison (37th,1:09:59), Phillip Harrop (60th, 1:14:37), Jimmy Kelly (80th, 1:19:44), Martin Holland (88th, 1:20:49) & Graeme Murray (102nd, 1:22:45) also took part. It was the second race in the Grand Prix & Peter Fendley, the Harriers Chairman explained: “The aim of the Grand Prix is to encourage members to turn out together, in club colours, for local races, giving us a visible presence & a chance to win prizes and to put the club on the map!” “It’s good when a plan comes together!” he added. The next race in the Grand Prix is the opening race in the Notts AAA Summer League at Epperstone on Wednesday 23rd April & starts at 7:15pm.
The club was represented in the Lincoln 10km by Dave Ward (50:20) & Helen Eastland (52:30) and in the Rother Valley 10km By Donna Blizard (50:48). Further a field Dennis Learad (1:36:46) & John Proffitt (1:44:03) completed the Prague Half Marathon.
The junior Harriers have also been busy competing in the Rother Valley Fun Run, where Callum Berridge (11th, 17:29) was the first home for the club, followed by: Lauren Ward (19th, 18:04), David Ward (20th, 18:04), Ben Twible (21st, 18:05), Aidan Bonser (22nd, 18:09), Kevin Ruane (58th, 25:33), Emily Twible (59th, 26:00).
The Harriers Annual General Meeting will take place at Manton Club, Retford Road, on Wednesday 30th April, 7:30pm start. All members are urged to attend, a buffet will be provided.
The Annual Chesterfield Canal Relay Race between the Harriers & Retford AC will take place on Thurs 29th May. It's Retford's turn to stage it, so we'll be running from Retford to Worksop & back again. All you eager to run please contact John Harrison, we need at least 10 runners. They will provide us with a buffet afterwards - It's always good fun & often quite exciting - to see how it went last year see the Senior Section page.
