Following up on her success in last years Notts Summer League where she won her under 20’s age category, Worksop Harriers Rachel West once again struck Gold in the Nottinghamshire Cross-Country Championship.

Running a well judged race Rachel (27:31) moved up into Gold medal position on the final lap of her 5km race.
Rachel’s mother, Tracey (32:54) an experienced county performer, also ran well, finishing 5th in her age category & 11th overall in the senior ladies 8km race, where the ladies team missed out on bronze medals by just 5points. Rachel is currently taking a degree in philosophy at Sheffield University, where she is a member of their athletics team.
The races were held in conjunction with the Derbyshire Championships at Markeaton Park, Derby & benefited from perfect weather conditions both for the runners & spectators.
The rest of the Harriers finished as follows:

Under 13’s girls 3km
Emily Appleby (25th, 15:15).

Under 13 boys 3km
Aidan Bonser (21st, 14:16).

Tracy Moore (44th, 41:56).

Senior men’s 10km

Keith Hopkinson (74th, 43:25),
David Havenhand (77th, 43:51),
Peter Fendley (86th, 44:54),
Graeme Murray (107th, 48:45),
Jimmy Kelly (115th, 51:17).

The clubs next cross-country outing will be to compete in the Midland Counties championships at the notoriously muddy Newbold Common, at Leamington Spa on Saturday 26th January.

The Guardian photographer & Rotherham Harrier Nigel Brookes was the winner of the Gerald Story Memorial Fun Run, at Worksop College.

The race was sponsored by The Worksop Guardian & once again had a festive feel, with many of the competitors running in fancy dress.

With all the proceeds going to Cancer Research UK, the runners helped raise valuable funds for this worthy cause as well as shed a few extra pounds gained over the Christmas period.

Steve Battle, a previous winner, was the first Worksop Harrier home in 4th place.

All 143 finishers of the 5mile race received a commemorative medal.
